Do you receive raw materials or APIs in blue drums? Do you have to move all of these drums to the sampling booth so they can be opened and analyzed using a conventional handheld Raman system? Not anymore! Come and see what the Agilent Vaya handheld Raman spectrometer can do. Electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) play an important role during the charging and discharging life cycle. Lithium salts, organic solvents, and additives are typical components of an LIB electrolyte. A new application note discusses a holistic approach for the compositional analysis of three unknown electrolyte solutions. An 8890 GC and 7010 triple quadrupole MS system was used for the determination of volatiles. A 1290 Infinity II LC coupled with a 6545XT AdvanceBio LC/Q-TOF was employed for measuring organics and additives. A 7900 ICP-MS was used for elemental profiling and quantitation. This multiplatform approach offers a promising way to uncover analytical challenges associated with the reverse engineering of electrolyte solution recipes. It also can help LIB manufacturers implement routine quality control analysis and close monitoring of electrolyte degradation studies over battery aging. We are honored to be inducted into Junior Achievement of Northern California's Business Hall of Fame for our mentorship of students from underrepresented communities. Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization that works with schools and businesses to provide learning programs related to career readiness, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and more. As part of this work, Agilent team members take local students on tours of our Santa Clara labs and provide mentorship on career paths. We also support Junior Achievement through grants from the Agilent Foundation. “Through our lab tours and mentorship, the students can begin seeing themselves in STEM careers, and that's very exciting,” said Lynn Metrulas, an Agilent vice president and longtime volunteer with Junior Achievement.
