Blending hydrogen with natural gas as a lower carbon fuel source is becoming more common. A new application note outlines the use of an Agilent 990 Micro GC to perform a relatively comprehensive analysis of these mixtures at low cost with excellent repeatability in less than five minutes. The two-channel configuration measures H2, O2/N2, CH4, CO2, and C2 to C8 alkanes, but cannot determine H2S, COS, and unsaturated hydrocarbons of C2. Due to the relatively high H2 content and the need to accurately measure O2/N2, neither helium nor nitrogen can be used as a carrier gas.
